Trivia ~ Man Made
~ Symbols ~
Why does the circle with the arrow represent men and the circle with the cross on the bottom represent women?
These are Greek mythology symbols. The female symbol represents a woman holding a hand mirror and is associated with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty. The male symbol represents a spear and a shield and is associated with the Greek god of war, Ares.
The symbols also represent Mars and Venus (the Roman god of war and the Roman goddess of beauty).
GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!
I think we're all familiar with the peace sign--that forked symbol with a circle around it. The fascinating thing is that the symbol was really invented to call for nuclear disarmament, not peace (directly that is). The symbol was used by the Direct Action Committee in 1958 and was first shown at peace marches in England. The symbol is actually a composite of the semaphore (a method of using visual signals to convey information--like lights or flags) signals for N and D, for nuclear disarmament.
The names of the three wise monkeys are: Mizaru (See no evil); Mikazaru (Hear no evil); Mazaru (Speak no evil)
