Trivia ~ It's The Law
United States
"The Ten Commandments contain 297 words. The Bill of Rights is stated in 463 words. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address contains 266 words. A recent U.S. federal directive to regulate the price of cabbage contains 26,911 words.
"Mailing an entire building has been illegal in the U.S. since 1916 when a man mailed a 40,000 ton brick house across Utah to avoid high freight rates.
There are only two things that can be legally thrown out of a moving vehicle in the U.S., without getting a ticket for obstructing traffic or littering. One of them is clear water. The other, hilariously, is chicken feathers. In the olden days, chicken fan-ners used to carry cages with them to the major towns from their farms. Due to the bumpy ride, the chicken used to shed their feathers, and these poor farmers were always fined for littering. So they protested and took up the case with the Supreme Court that decreed that water and chicken feathers are the only two things that you can throw out of a moving vehicle in the U.S. and not be fined.
The U.S. Congress passed a law in 1832 requiring all American citizens to spend one day each year fasting and praying.
For the most part, people ignored the law, and no effort was made to enforce the legislation.
It is widely believed that if an electric chair or gas chamber should fail to operate, or the rope breaks during a hanging, the prisoner must go free because he cannot twice be put in jeopardy for the same offense. But this is a confusion between the trial and the sentence. A man cannot, under the Constitution be tried twice for the same offense. But once he has been convicted and sentenced, then the sentence must be carried out, malfunctioning equipment or not.
In 1901, there were approximately 230 reported murders in the entire United States, even though gun ownership was a fact of life.
